- Ahoshta Tarkaan: In A Horse and His Boy, an
elderly Tisroc of Calormene's Grand Vizier. He is due to marry Aravis in an
arranged marriage. Base born, he works his way up the social heirarchy by
intrigue and flattery. His appearance has little to attract the reluctant
Aravis: He is short and wizened with age, and has a humped back. [FGN 167]
- Alambil: One of the two planets visible in night in
Narnia, the name of which means "Lady of Peace." When in conjunction
with the star Tarva, it spells good fortune for Narnia. [FGN 167]
- albatross: This large seabird leads the Dawn Treader
out of the terrifying blackness surrounding the Dark Island after Lucy calls
in desperation to Aslan for help. It is one of many signs of Aslan's providence
in Narnia. There is a long maritime tradition of the albatross as guide and
harbinger of good fortune (featured in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rhyme
of the Ancient Mariner). [FGN 167]
- Alimash: A captain of the chariots in Calormen and

- Ansalon: The southernmost major continent of Krynn.
[DL-MW1 326]
- Aravir: In Prince Caspian, the morning star
of Narnia, which gleamed like a little moon. [FGN 168]
- Aravis: Only daughter of Kidrash Tarkaan, lord of the
Calormene province of Calavar, and descended, she is taught, from the god
Tash. She is important in A Horse and His Boy, along with Shasta and the Narnian
talking horses, Bree and Hwin. Aravis runs away from home when her mother
arranges a marriage to Ahoshta -- 60 years old, with a face like an ape. She
meets up with and eventually marries Shasta (Cor) and becomes queen of Archenland.
Aravis, despite her faults, displays the qualities of the virtuous pagan,
also found later (in The Last Battle) in Emeth. She is as true as
steel and would never abandon a companion. She is also attracted to Aslan,
even though the first hint of his existence comes through Bree's frequent
expression, "By the Lion's Mane." Aravis discovers that Aslan has
guided her, and also wounded her with the same welts her unfortunate maidservant
received, awakening her from her indifference. When she meets Queen Lucy they
become instant friends. [FGN 168]
